For the purpose of the investigation based on design research methodology, an e-learning tutorial in geostatistics has been designed, in real world settings and in collaboration with instructors from industry and teachers from university. The learning resource has been implemented in parallel with class lectures for blended learning at one company and at one engineering school. The module has been refined iteratively along the process.
The paper is a description of the e-learning module and of its application in academic and corporate contexts. The e-learning resource is a self-paced tutorial which provides basic knowledge in geostatistics prior to learners’ participation to class. In addition, we analyze the concepts in geoscience and their relations (discipline or content knowledge), the way they are usually represented and transmitted to the learners (pedagogical knowledge) and their impact on the design and usage of the e-learning module. To finish, we discuss the choices of technology that have been made to support learning in the particular context of the study (technology affordance).
