Common learning resources for academia & industry: the case of digital provision in engineering

In contrast to globalized learning systems, the educational sector can evolve towards local integration for the provision of customized solutions. By making use of a comprehensive literature review, we try to understand why academia and industry would cooperate in the field of engineering education. In particular, we examine blended learning and the development of common learning resources based on technology. Thus, in the paper, we focus on organizational, discipline related, pedagogical and human factors.
We describe the blended learning usages and we use the didactic triangle as a single framework to analyze its three components, namely the content, the teachers/instructors and the students/learners. We describe how HEI and corporations make a different use of blended learning, how teachers and instructors have different manners to perform their job, and how students and employees stand at different levels of knowledge, autonomy and competence.
The paper concludes by discussing the didactics approaches and the instructional design models that are deemed adapted to the organizational variations and to the discipline knowledge in engineering.
